As business owners, we tend to focus more on everything that is wrong in our organizations rather than what is going well. Typically, we spend our days dealing with problems and challenges; so at least once a month I suggest taking a step back and looking at everything that was achieved in the last 30 days. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much you have accomplished and how good it feels.
But let’s get back to Thanksgiving. Earlier this month, I suggested that you start a Daily Gratitude Log – each day writing down 3-5 things for which you are grateful. Before you shut down the office for the long holiday weekend with family, friends and potentially some football here are a few other things to consider being thankful for:
- The business you have built — and continue to build — provides for you, your family, your employees and their families. Count the literal number of people for whom YOU are making a difference. It is big! Make sure to thank your employees because without them you wouldn’t be where you are (and neither would they).
- The communities where you live and work. We all know that small business is the economic engine of this country. This means that YOU are making a significant impact to your local economy, helping to spur economic growth. Be grateful that this country provides us the freedom to be entrepreneurs and follow our dreams.
- Your customers value the products and/or services that you offer. They value YOU. What you offer is important, it matters and YOU should take some time this weekend to pat yourself on the back and recognize your achievements.
- And if the above isn’t enough for you to be thankful, well then, as you are feasting with family and friends this Thanksgiving simply be thankful that you are a business owner and, as such, you are in charge, you can do what you want, when you want and you don’t have to explain to anyone what you are doing or why. Nice.
Happy Thanksgiving!
