It’s good to be back with you again after a brief hiatus for the holidays. I hope you had a December to remember filled with the jovial faces of family and friends!
In December, I often do what I call a five things exercise with my clients. It’s not too late for you to do it too and it’s simple: list five things you accomplished in 2015, both at work and personally.
There’s some serious psychology behind this that will see you achieve more over time. You see, acknowledging both big and small wins, boosts our mental health and mood, which also happens to be contagious. You and your employees will feel good acknowledging these wins and how far you’ve come as a team in 2015 because it will help solidify that you are making significant, even meaningful progress. If you blaze past all your wins without properly celebrating them, you also forfeit a morale boost that deepens satisfaction and commitment over time.
So don’t miss the moment! Celebrate! It’s important.
Once you’ve done that properly and with enough attention paid, you can focus on 2016. So here we are in 2016. Now we’re thinking goals. What are the goals you’d like to achieve in your business and personal life in the New Year?
Why do I include personal life, you may be wondering?
Focusing on your personal life in addition to your professional life allows you to focus on the whole person. Work also helps you achieve goals you have for your personal life. Take retirement, for example. Work gives you the money and then the freedom to not have to work until your dying day (if you don’t want to.) And life has a way of sneaking up on us. Before we know it, five or ten years have passed and we’re no closer to retirement in terms of goals achieved or money saved. It’s important to zoom out often and take stock.
It can be overwhelming to think through the future, with all of its unknowns. But you can do it, I know you can! Developing a plan will make you even more confident in your future.
I’d love to be there for you, so call me if you need any help.
Cheers to you and all you will achieve in 2016!
